Safe Sport - Resources and Presentation

Safe Sport is creating a healthy, positive safe training and competitive environment that by its CULTURAL nature is free of maltreatment and abuse.

Banff Alpine Racers and Bow Valley Quikies take Safe Sport seriously.  Our coaches are required to complete Safe Sport online training each year and attend Club Training.  We highly encourage parents to take the FREE online course to educate ourselves on prevention of maltreatment in sport.  Athletes in U16-FIS attend in house education sessions on Safe Sport with Head Coaches each season.

In 2022 BAR/BVQ hired Alison Forsyth from ITP Sport presented parent, athlete and coach information sessions at Norquay.  In 2024 hired Generation Safe along with LLSC, SSV presenting parent, athlete and coach information webinars.  We want to ensure the safety, well-being and inclusion of our membership.  Generation Safe specializes in Safe Sport, and are helping guide Banff Alpine Racers and Bow Valley Quikies in the right direction for the future of sport.

Crisis Management Resources -

  • The Calgary Mobile Response Team (MRT), operated by Alberta Health Services in the Calgary Zone, provides 24/7 community-based mental health crisis support, stabilization, and assessment for individuals experiencing distress. The team is staffed by mental health clinicians and works in collaboration with the Calgary Police Service. They can be accessed by calling the Distress Centre at 403-266-4357 and requesting “Mental Health Crisis Triage.” This service can also assist in coordinating larger group debriefs for those affected, and is the primary referral that has been recommended for situations such as this.
  • Alberta Health Services also operates the Mental Health Helpline (1-877-303-2642), which is available 24/7 to provide confidential support, information, and referrals for anyone experiencing emotional distress or seeking guidance on available mental health resources. This can be a helpful option for individuals or families who may prefer immediate phone-based support.
  • Frank van den Berg and his team from CSI Alberta are available as a support resource. Frank’s expertise includes mental training and coaching, crisis intervention and psychological first aid, psychometric assessment, return-from-injury support, team building, conflict resolution and mediation, coach education and support, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), as well as biofeedback and neurofeedback training. He can be contacted directly at fvdberg@csialberta.ca if you feel this support would be beneficial for your athletes, staff, or families.  *Please note we have reached out directly to Frank for Club sessions already
  • Chaplaincy support, Steve Sellers is also available to provide care and guidance to individuals or groups who may find that type of support helpful during this time. He can be reached directly at athletechaplaincy@gmail.com.
  • Mountain Muskox - offers support for people who have been affected by loss and trauma in the mountains - Mountain Muskox
